Ashbrook: You did it!

Parini: I did. I was a very shy boy from Scranton, PA. I had no friends—that’s how it felt. I was very, very shy. So I looked around my classroom, got a notebook, and put everybody’s name down, one after the other. I found something to compliment in each kid. There was a fellow who was an amazing football player. He could throw beautiful passes. I remember waiting for the right moment, and I said, “You have a great arm. How do you throw passes like that?” That guy stuck with me through high school. We became real friends. There was one girl I felt sorry for her. There was nothing going for this girl, shall we just say. I won’t describe her. In an introductory Spanish class, I heard her say the word burro. And I’d never heard that roll before. It’s as if there were fourteen r’s—.
